Verdict

DUCASSE (11) underrated miler who can keep raising the bar this prep. Pounced late first-up over 1400m in the James Ruse at this track. Maps well from the draw and open to further improvement. Strong tempo suits. WEST OF AFRICA (14) gave weight to Ducasse when just over a month between runs for a sound sixth in the James Ruse. Ready to peak and watch for him late at the good odds. PERICLES (1) has a dynamite second-up record and had excuses on the Good (3) surface when a fading eighth in the G1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield over 1400m. Gets the right run and can return to form. IOWNA MERC (2) comes here in peak condition and gets an economical run from the draw. Strong win in the G3 Liverpool City Cup at Randwick over 1300m and sure to be thereabouts. VON HAUKE (10) unsuited first-up over 1200m when fifth in the LR Abell Stks at Moonee Valley. Closed off well on that occasion and can surprise some of his more fancied rivals. The chances don't end there.
